BMW has revealed that the Gran Coupe Concept will be produced as the 6 Series Gran Coupe.
It looks like we got it wrong.
We couldn’t see the logic in taking BMW’s four door, swoopy coupe concept – the BMW Gran Coupe Concept – and tagging it with a 6 Series moniker. Why would BMW do that, we said? Much better to push it way upmarket and call it the BMW 8 Series.
But now BMW has revealed that they will be be putting the Gran Coupe Concept in to production as the BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe. Shows how good we are. But we still think it’s a daft way to go. The 6 Series is perceived as the 5 Series Coupe by many BMW buyers. Particularly as the M5 and M6 share so much.
But now you’ll have to add a new layer to the 6 Series – the 6 Series Gran Coupe. It looks like it will get offered with a choice of 2 diesels, 2 petrols, a hybrid and an M version. It’s going to get very confusing in addition to the regular 6 Series in petrol, diesel, hybrid and M versions. Not to mention the 6 Series Convertible – in petrol, diesel, hybrid and M versions
But it’s BMW’s game, and an addition to the 6 Series range is what we’re getting. Not only is the Gran Coupe going to appear – probably in 2012 – but Klaus Draeger – who is on BMW’s Board of Management and revealed the Gran Coupe Concept will become a 6-Series four-door coupe – also says that BMW are looking at a 6 Series Shooting Brake, although nothing has been decided.
It’s starting to look as if BMW are trying to outdo Audi in the Niche stakes.
