The BMW X2 – BMW’s latest addition to its ‘Lifestyle SUVs – has arrived in production guise, with just a single engine option, the xDrive20d, available at launch.
It’s more than a year since the BMW X2 Concept was revealed, previewing yet another addition to BMW’s Lifestyle SUV range, although the X2 is rather more Crossover than SUV.
We actually had ‘Official’ spy photos of the new X2 a few months ago which emphasised its target market, and now it arrives in production guise and it looks very much like the concept, and not half as fugly as its X4 and X6 brethren.
Sitting on the same UKL2 platform as the X1 and 2 Series Gran Tourer (an MINI for that matter), it will be able to deliver FWD or 4WD, diesel and petrol and even hybrids. But, for now, you can only have an xDrive20d diesel.
BMW are clearly aiming at a younger demographic, trendy, urban buyers with the X2, promising driving pleasure and great dynamics as well as a style statement too.
Trim levels will be the X2 SE as well as Sport, M Sport and M Sport X (don’t expect a proper ‘M’ version), and the interior isn’t exactly a million miles away from the X1.
The X2 M Sport and M Sport X get M Sport suspension which is firmer as well as 10mm lower than the regular setup, and all models come with 6.5″ touchscreen with Sat Nav.
Out of the gate when the X2 goes on sale in November in the UK is the £33,980 BMW X2 xDrive20d SE is Hobson’s choice, with its 187bhp four-pot with 295lb/ft of torque promising to get the X2 to 62mph in 7.7 seconds and return 61.4mpg.
It will be joined in 2018 by a few more engine options, with the X2 sDrive20i, X2 sDrive18d and X2 xDrive18d all on offer.
