Fiat has revealed the convertible version of last year’s 500byDIESEL – the Fiat 500CbyDIESEL – with lots of DIESEL logos and old jeans for seats is now on sale in the UK.
We’re (half) seriously starting to wonder if we should have a couple of extra web sites; one for MINI Limited Editions and one for Fiat 500 Limited Editions. I’m sure we could keep them busy enough to justify their existence. And we could always top that up with the latest ‘Special’ Veyron or ‘Last’ Zonda for good measure. Full time job for someone.
Today’s limited edition / special edition / must have / cynical marketing ploy / latest model (delete to suit your pov) is the drop top – well, more Landaulet on the 500 than drop top – version of one of the earlier Limited Edition Fiat 500s – the Fiat 500byDIESEL – which loses its roof to become the Fiat 500CbyDiesel, as we revealed in April.
The Fiat 500byDIESEL was not, as many assumed when it came out, a diesel powered version of the Fiat 500 but one trimmed in a style inspired by the design label DIESEL. So just like the tin top version the 500CbyDiesel gets 16″ alloys with DIESEL logo, burnished metal trim, yellow stitched steering wheel and lots and lots of ‘DIESEL’ logos. Oh, and the ‘Pièce de Résistance – old jeans for the seat covers. Well, not quite, but the upholstery is ‘Denim fabric with yellow stitching’.
The 500CbyDIESEL comes with any of the 500′s standard engines – 1.2 and 1.4 petrol; 1.3 diesel (just so you can have a dieselbyDIESEL). Colour choice is Midnight Indigo (because it looks like stone-washed denim jeans. No, really – it’s in the press release), Crossover Black and DIESEL Green. The roof comes in black, ivory or red.
Prices for the Fiat 500CbyDIESEL start at £14,865 for the 1.2-litre and rise to £17,265 for the 1.3-litre MultiJet. Mickey taking apart, the original 500byDIESEL sold well enough (or they wouldn’t be doing a convertible version) so there is every reason to expect the convertible to sell quickly. And unlike the tin top DIESEL which only sold online, it looks like the convertible version is available from your local Fiat dealer.
The Fiat 500C is still a cracking little soft-top, even if you do make it look like a pair of jeans on wheels.
