The old Honda Civic Type R was a really cracking hot-hatch. Not only did it handle well (even if it did have the habit of playing on three wheels if pushed), it went well and it was, as you would expect from a Honda, very well bolted together.
But the latest version of the Type R is a bit of a let-down. It’s got old and soft. It’s bigger than its predecessor but has no more power so, instead of being an appealing car, it’s become a bit lost and overshadowed by the competition, such as the VW Scirocco R and the Ford Focus RS.
Buy it looks like salvation may be at hand in the form of tuning firm Mugen, who appear to be preparing a Euro version of the new Honda Civic Type R.
Not a huge amount is yet known about Mugen’s plans for the Type R – except they are planning it – but based on the Civic Type RR 4-door saloon Mugen have produced in Japan we can expect to see some serious fettling of the suspension, big alloys, deep front spoiler and rear wing, enormous exhaust and something in the region of 240bhp.
It’s been sad to see the thrill of the Type R watered down so much in the current version. Let’s hope Mugen do step up to the plate in Europe and produce a worthy successor to the original Honda Civic Type R.
