Honda Insight gets a tweak.
In an effort to address complaints about poor handling and ride and low rent interior Honda has modified the suspension of the Honda Insight Hybrid and upped cabin quality
The Honda Insight is the car Jeremy Clarkson called the worst car in the world. At the time we said we understand why he said it, and although it is a pretty dire car it is far from the very worst car on the planet.
Jezza’s comments were about the car as a car, but also about this whole hybrid nonsense which Honda are actually against. Honda are on record as saying that the future is fuel cell not hybrid, but they can’t let Toyota walk away with the ‘Green Halo Market’ with its Prius. Hence the Insight.
But the Insight was unpleasant to drive, felt cheap and handled quite poorly. So Honda has had a play and changed camber angles at the rear, played with recoil rates on the springs and fiddled with the suspension brace in an effort to make things better in the ride and handling department.
Honda say these changes improve the ride in the Insight and improve handling. Let’s hope they’re right. Honda have also upped the quality of materials used on some of the interior, splashed in a bit of chrome/silver finish and reviewed the range of seat colours in an effort to improve the poor quality perception of the cabin.
None of these improvements – not even those to the suspension – are retro fit, so the poor suckers who fell for the Insight story in the first year are lumbered with a cheap feeling, slow and poorly handling hybrid. That’ll teach ‘em.
But at least it’s marginally better looking than the Prius.
