The Honda Sports EV has been revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show, and it’s a two-seat sporty take on the Urban EV Concept Honda revealed at Frankfurt.
There is a school of thought in the industry that mainstream cars will become nothing more than mobile white goods once the revolution is won and all cars are electric and all drive themselves. But not at Honda.
Earlier this year we had the Honda Urban EV arrive at the Frankfurt Motor Show promising a new compact electric car perfect for urban use and looking, much to everyone’s surprise, like a VW Golf Mk 1.
Now Honda has turned its attention to the small electric sports car, with a new concept at the Tokyo Motor Show – the Honda Sport EV Concept, teased last month – and it’s equally appealing.
Using the same retro design language as the Urban EV, the Sports EV is based on the same platform and is clearly intended to be an entry-level sporty electric runaround.
Although Honda has said the Urban EV is heading for production, they’re not saying the same about the Sports EV. But we can’t see Honda delivering the Urban EV and not following up with the Sports EV.
So with the Urban EV due to arrive by 2020, it seems likely the Sports EV will arrive a year or two later.
By which time Honda may decide to tell us exactly what the electric powertrain delivers.
