Jaguar Land Rover will announce next week that they are entering the electric Formula E Motorsport Series with a Jaguar badged car.
Jaguar Land Rover are signalling their move to deliver electric road cars (something we reported on earlier this year) by entering the Formula E Motorsport Series, claims Sky News. And it makes sense.
It makes sense because electric cars are finally starting to become more mainstream as the technology finally starts to catch up with what drivers in the real world want, and the ‘Dieselgate’ scandal has made buyers realise diesel cars are not the Holy Grail of ‘clean’ motoring.
In addition to that impetus, other premium car makers are already showcasing their plans for properly viable electric cars in the premium sector – like the Porsche E and the electric Audi Q6 – and Jaguar really have to play soon in the EV world to make sure they’re not wrong-footed.
Sensibly, it looks like Jaguar will be teaming up with Williams – real experts in preparing cars for F1 – in their quest to make an impact in Formula E, and who were partners with Jaguar in the C-X75 electric hybrid supercar project that never actually made a move to production (but did turn in to a James Bond Villain’s car).
It seems JLR are just waiting for accreditation from the FIA before they reveal their plans on Tuesday, according to Sky.
So how long before Jaguar reveal plans for an electric XJ to take on the Porsche E and Tesla S, or even a bigger electric SUV to take on the Tesla Model X?
