With the Lamborghini Urus almost ready to hit the road, Lamborghini is taking a look back at their original LM002 SUV to shout out their expertise in SUVs.
We have got used to every car premium maker – from Porsche to Rolls Royce and Bentley to Alfa Romeo – delivering an SUV as the world continues to lap up high-riding SUVs of every shape, size and price.
But the idea of an Italian supercar maker delivering a credible SUV is still a slightly odd thing to get your head round. A bit like the Maktoums’ Godolphin deciding to breed Shire horses.
Still, Ferrari are close to biting the bullet on a Ferrari SUV, and Lamborghini has already done so with the Urus, a sport SUV which is about to be launched in production guise.
That imminent arrival sees Lamborghini keen to point out that the Urus is nothing new for Lamborghini, but is simply a logical extension of their expertise in powerful, luxury SUVs.
That experience is the LM002, Lamborghini’s 1986 SUV with big butch looks and the V12 from the Countach, with proper off-road stuff like a trio of locking diffs, in the process creating a truly original, if not hugely desirable, off-roader.
Lamborghini is using the hashtag #SinceWeMadeItPossible on the back of the LM002, claiming they pioneered the super sports car capable of racing off-road and in the process created the world’s first luxury SUV. It’s a bold claim.
