Land Rover Discovery 4 – Still the best 4×4

Land Rover Discovery 4 - Still the best 4x4 by far

Land Rover has won the Diesel Car Magazine award for best 4×4, beating off competition from the Range Rover and Freelander 2. Win-Win for LR.

Awards in any aspect of life are nice to have. They’re a validation of what we do; a pat on the back; a feather in the cap. They make you feel good.

Which means Land Rover must have been feeling pretty chuffed when the finalists in the best 4×4 category at the Diesel Car Magazine – Car of the Year Awards were announced. The three contenders were the Discovery 4, Range Rover and Freelander 2. So you won’t be hugely shocked to learn that a Land Rover won the Best 4×4 for 2010 – the Land Rover Discovery 4.

As we said when we recently reviewed the 2010 Range Rover Sport, the 2010 versions of Land Rover’s offerings are the best the company has ever had. Their ability has never been in question, but now they offer remarkable power, economy and refinement right across the range.

We’re playing with the current baby of the Land Rover Range at the moment – the Freelander 2 – and are already impressed with what’s on offer, and although we’re trying hard to find fault – it’s our job – we’re finding it a struggle. And it seems that Diesel Car Magazine had the same problem when it judged the Discovery 4 to be top of the heap.

Ian Robertson, editor of Diesel Car Magazine said:

“We offer no apologies for an all Land Rover line-up as finalists in this category, as the British firm’s 2010 range is simply the best ever. The Discovery 4 has always been unbeatable off-road, and now it has the on-road ace to match, with decent road manners and top notch refinement. There’s even enough room for seven full size adults on-board – and there aren’t many vehicles that can cope with that.”

Which we pretty much concur with. So far.
