  • Update 24/9/09: Land Rover has now confirmed that the Range Rover LRX will debut in 2010 and go on sale in 2011.

We reported back in March that Land Rover had received some funding to go towards the development of its LRX Concept, the ‘Eco Land Rover’. We guess that Land Rover got that even though Tata and JLR didn’t get Government help in a big way but instead sourced private finance.

But Autocar are today reporting that the Land Rover LRX is to debut next June. Why next June? Because that will be 40 years since the first Range Rover strode on to the world stage and started the whole trend for luxury 4x4s.

It would appear that the looks of the LRX are going to stay pretty close to the concept. There will be the obvious toning down you always get from concept to production, but the shape stays, which is good news.  The underpinnings will be based on the latest Land Rover Freelander, which is a more than competent place to start. The LRX will also be built at Halewood along with the Freeelander. The new Land Rover LRX will also make extensive use of aluminium, as reported recently.

The big news on the eco front is that the LRX will come as a Hybrid, with electric motors running the back axle. In this mode it is expected that the LRX will achive 60+ mpg with emissions of around 120g/km. Impressive for a reasonable sized SUV. And it will give Land Rover a big leap in to this burgeoning sector as people start to trade down their old gas guzzlers, but still look for prestige and quality.

Expect to see the Land Rover LRX on 17th June 2010, with the first LRX hitting showrooms late in 2010/early 2011.
