Le Mans (2010) – RESULT
We were expecting Peugeot to dominate the 2010 Le Mans, and Nigel Mansell to show us what an ex-F1 driver can do. Did it happen?
The expectation was that Peugeot would dominate the 2010 Le Mans. But they didn’t. Up until the half way stage it looked likely that Peugeot could pull off a win, but the Peugeot 908s faded and reliability issues ended the hopes of all the Peugeots.
The unexpected demise of Peugeot left the field open for Audi, who took full advantage in the Audi R15s to take a 1-2-3 victory with Dumas, Bernhard and Mike Rockenfeller taking first; Lotterer, Fassler and Treluyer got second and the Audi favourites – McNish, Kristensen, and Capello – could only manage third.
And what of the Le Mans ‘Team Mansell’ effort with Nigel and the boys turning up to make a serious attempt at giving dad the only title he probably still covets? The attempt lasted 17 minutes before a puncture threw Mansell Snr in to the armco at 200mph. Suitably chastened and a little battered, team Mansell packed up and went home.
There’s always next year.
