The new range-topping Mercedes-AMG GT R will debut this week at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, ahead of which AMG give us a video tease.
It’s almost two years since the AMG GT – AMG’s first proper standalone car – arrived as a range-topping performance model from Mercedes’ performance brand, but the AMG GT and GT S were never going to be the whole story, and the next instalment of the AMG GT is on its way, as we revealed with a spy video earlier this year.
Scheduled to be revealed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this Friday (24 June) the AMG GT R is a 570bhp, track-focused but road legal take on the AMG GT3, and is a car aimed directly at competition like the Porsche 911 GT3 RS and Aston Martin GT8.
Under the bonnet, AMG is though to be delivering an impressive 570bhp from its 4.0 litre Turbo – a big jump on the GT S’s 503bhp – driven to the rear wheels through a tweaked 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox and likely to offer performance of under 3.5 seconds to 62mph.
Elsewhere, AMG will give the GT R a more aggressive body including big air intakes at the front and on the bonnet, new front splitter, big back wheel arches and a big fixed spoiler, all in the name of track-focused aerodynamics and downforce, and a new grille, as well as bigger wheels and tyres, upgraded brakes and revised suspension.
With a debut of the AMG GT R on Friday at the FoS, we should get more, including production numbers an on sale date, and a price – which is likely to be around £130,000.
