The new Ford Ka+ has been officially revealed for the UK and Europe as a budget offering to sit below the Fiesta and costing from just £8,995.
The Ford Ka always struggled to make its mark, and the second generation, a Fiat 500 in Ford clothes, just never found its place in the market.
But Ford are hoping that the new Ka+ – revealed officially today – will carve its own niche as a supermini for city car money, and with as much space as the Fiesta and prices starting from just £8,995 it could be a sales winner for the Blue Oval.
Basically the Ford Figo but with an overhaul to make it suit UK and European buyers with better quality materials and dynamics (straight out of the gate – unlike the EcoSport when that first arrived as a sub par offering), the Ka+ is being built in Ford’s new plant in India as a five-door with just a 1.2 litre petrol engine option.
Starting point will be the Ka+ Studio with 70PS which will start at £8,995, with a Zetec version another £1,000. There will also be an 85PS version for £10,295.
Specs are going to be quite basic, but the entry-level cars will get electric windows and mirrors as well as remote locking, with the Zetec models adding stuff like Air Con and the basic SYNC infotainment. But buyers will be able to spec the Ka+ with goodies from alloys to heated seats.
Ford are clearly taking aim at cars like the Dacia Sandero, Kia Rio, Vauxhall Viva et al, but it does look like the Ka+ offers a lot of car for the money, although it’s not exactly going to attract buyers looking for cutting edge style and technology.
The Ford Ka+ will go on sale later this month, although the entry-level Studio won’t be available until later in the year.
