The new McLaren 720S – revealed at the Geneva Motor Show – will spawn a new hardcore version as McLaren confirm plans for a Long Tail version.
Perhaps a little surprisingly, it took McLaren less than 48 hours to reveal a much titivated 720S – the McLaren 720S Velocity – as they demonstrated what McLaren’s Special Operations could do to the new 720S. Which turned out to be much titivation and an extra £150k on the price tag.
You’d have thought that a couple of takes on the new 720S in just a few days would be enough, but it seems McLaren are already thinking a bit further down the line with confirmation the 720S will spawn a Long Tail model, just as the 650S did.
McLaren boss Mike Flewitt, speaking to Car & Driver, confirmed that a Longtail version of the 720S will be built (the McLaren 740LT, perhaps?), which will be lighter, have improved dynamics and more power.
That’s the same recipe McLaren used to create the 675LT, and with the new 720S already having a chunk more power than the 675LT it seems likely McLaren will push it to 750 PS (740bhp) along with similar tweaks to the 675LT.
However, unlike the arrival of the 720S Velocity, we expect the McLaren 750LT (or whatever number McLaren give it) to be a year or three down the line.
