The new Mercedes CLS – Mercedes swoopy four-door coupe – gets its first tease ahead of a debut at the Los Angles Motor Show in December 2017. On sale 2018.
If any car started the fad for the four-door coupe, it’s the Mercedes-Benz CLS.
First revealed in 2005, it was based on the E-Class but, as the E-Class’ sexy, swoopy sibling, it fitted in the Mercedes range below the S Class and above the E.
It was the progenitor of a new class of four-door premium models – like the Audi A7 and BMW 6 Series Grand Coupe and even the Aston Martin Rapide – and is still going strong after more than a decade, and a refreshed CLS in 2011. But now it’s time for a new CLS.
Teased ahead of a debut at the 2017 Los Angeles Motor Show, Mercedes aren’t giving much away yet, but we do know a fair bit already.
With a slicker look than the slightly angular current CLS, the new CLS will, like the E-Class on which it’s based, be longer, lower and wider than the current model and is, say Mercedes, “The Original Perfected”, and will come with an interior matching those of the E-Class and S-Class.
Under the bonnet will be the usual four and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engine options, although this time round it seems unlikely there will be a mad, range-topping AMG 63, or a Shooting Brake version of any model in the range, but an AMG 53 is expected.
Instead, as far as the real performance CLS is concerned, its place will be taken by a four-door AMG GT designed to take on the Porsche Panamera and based on this new CLS.
It’s also arguable that the CLS should actually be the CLE with Mercedes’ current nomenclature, but Mercedes’ tease calls it the CLS Coupe, so we guess it keeps its name.
The new Mercedes CLS Coupe will debut at the Los Angles Motor Show at the very end of November 2017.
