The new 2019 Volvo S60 – Volvo’s 60 Series saloon – will debut in the summer in the US as Volvo completes the basics of its new 60 Series range.
We’ve already had the new Volvo XC60 for a year as Volvo replaces its rather ancient 60 Series range with new cars based on its Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform, just like the new 90 Series, and this last week saw the debut of the new Volvo V60 Estate.
Next up is the saloon, and we learn that the new 2018 Volvo S60 will get its debut this year – and it’ll be in the US.
Volvo’s US boss, Lex Kerssemakers, has confirmed to CNET’s Roadshow that the new S60 will arrive soon, with a launch planned at Volvo’s new Plant in Ridgeville, South Carolina, in summer 2018.
Expect a car almost identical – apart from the stylish shed on the back – to the new S90, with the same range of 2.0 litre diesel and petrol engines and a choice of plug-in hybrid options too.
It’s the final piece of the core 60 Series range, but it’s not the whole set of cars.
Still to come is the Cross Country Version of the new V60 and, perhaps, a Cross Country version of the S60 too, although, certainly in the UK, sales of the last S60 Cross Country were so poor Volvo may not bother.
There are also persistent rumours that once Volvo has completed its core range replacement – after the S60 arrives we still have replacements for the V40 and an S40 to come – Volvo will look at more niche products.
That could include not just coupe versions of cars like the S60 and S90 (which, of course, is actually the basis for the new Polestar 1), and even coupe versions of the XC40 and XC60.
