The Lynk & Co new car brand reveal for 20 October is teased as we discover the new car is expected to be the new Volvo XC40 in Geely clothes.
We ran a story on the tease for a new car brand – Lynk & Co – just last week, a new car brand about to be launched by Volvo owners Geely.
The whole pitch from Lynk & Co seemed to be that they would be different and that the car(s) they will reveal would change perceptions and be all about connectivity.
But the reality, according to Chinese media, is a bit more prosaic. And a little odd.
It seems Geely, responsible for turning Volvo from a lost soul under Ford in to a proper premium powerhouse, has decided it won’t market re-skinned Volvos under the Geely brand in China, but will use an all new brand – the aforementioned and teased Lynk & Co – to do that. Which is odd.
It’s odd because we understood Geely would use the new compact platform Volvo are building a new range of 40 Series cars on to deliver a range of relatively upmarket cars for the Chinese market under the Geely brand.
But they now seem to be planning to create a range of Lynk & Co cars based on Volvos and sold worldwide, although in China first and with Europe and the USA to follow by 2019. Which is an interesting turn of events.
It seems the car Lynk & Co reveal on 20 October will be a take on the new Volvo Xc40 – previewed recently by the 40.1 and 40.2 Concepts – and codenamed CX11, to be followed by a saloon, a hatchback and a crossover. Which all sounds very like Volvo’s plans for the new 40 Series.
We should find out more on Thursday.
