The Saab 9-4X SUV / Crossover will make its production ready debut at the LA Auto Show in November.
Eighteen months ago we reported that the Saab 9-4X was getting close to production. Of course, since that report in February 2009 Saab has been a bit busy escaping the clutches of GM, but has now found salvation with Victor Muller and Spyker.
But even in the midst of the madness that was the Spyker purchase of Saab, the first Saab 9-4x rolled off the production line – actually 147 9-4x were produced – in January as Saab geared up for final testing. But now, finally, there’s confirmation that the Saab SUV will make its production-ready debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November.
Of all place for the announcement, the news came from the Twitter page of the LA Auto Show (@laautoshow), which announced the debut last night. And the fact that Saab has chosen to launch in LA instead of Paris probably speaks volumes for their ambition for the 9-4X.
Saab will be looking to the US for a sizeable chunk of its sales, and can present itself as the interesting option for Cadillac SRX, for under the skin they are one and the same and are even coming off the same GM production line in Mexico. I’m afraid it will take a bit more than a change of ownership and a few months passing to sever the GM umbilical cord.
But that doesn’t make the Saab 9-4x a lesser car. In fact it seems to offer a very appealing cocktail of practicality and style and doubtless the similar decent oily bits as the Saab 9-5, namely a 2.0 litre 4 pot turbo and a 2.8 litre six pot turbo. And all wheel drive..
The Saab 9-4X is worth looking forward to.
