The Volvo XC40 – the little brother of the XC60 and XC90 – has been spied on video testing ahead of a debut expected at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show.
Volvo has already delivered a stunning blow to makers of ‘Premium’ SUVs with the arrival of its latest models, first of the new XC90, and more recently with the new XC60.
But the Volvo SUV which will probably be the biggest seller for the Swedish car maker is the new Volvo XC40.
We already know that the XC40 will arrive in production guise this year – because Volvo told us – and we have an idea how it will look thanks to the Concept 40.1 and 40.2 we saw last year.
That means a compact premium SUV which takes all that’s good about the XC60 and XC90 and wraps it up in a more compact guise, but still with a stunning interior with big central ‘Tablet’ infotainment.
Expected to arrive at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September – although Volvo could well do a reveal ‘Event’ before then – the XC40 has been spied out testing on this video, albeit wrapped up in completely OTT disguise.
Despite the cladding, the shape and proportions are evident, and the XC40 looks like it will get a very familiar front end complete with ‘Thor’ running lights.
Engines will come from a selection of Volvo’s Drive-E 1.5 litre three-cylinder and 2.0 litre four-cylinder options, and we also know there will be an XC40 T5 Plug-in Hybrid because Volvo claim it will be the powertrain which sounds the death knell of the diesel engine.
As the XC40’s debut nears, expect more revealing photos of Volvo’s compact SUV.
