The Volvo XC90 is on track to be the biggest selling large premium SUV in Europe in 2016, as its sales rise by 163% and it overtakes the BMW X5.
Volvo has had the best-selling mid-size SUV in Europe with the XC60 for years, but however good the old XC90 was it didn’t stand a chance against the might of the German SUVs and Land Rover. But not so with the new XC90.
JATO Dynamics are reporting that the new XC90 sold 26,680 units in the first nine months of 2016, an increase of 163 per cent over 2015 in a market that rose by 33 per cent.
Just ahead at the end of September was the BMW X5 with sales of 28,601, but with a year on year growth of just 1 per cent it’s clear the XC90 is going to be king of the big premium SUVs in Europe by the end of 2016. And deservedly so.
We’ve driven every trim level of XC90 with every one of the three powertrains – D5 diesel, T6 petrol and T8 plug-in hybrid – and the all offer something slightly different, but all are underpinned by the XC90’s wonderful, Swedish take on practicality and luxury.
However, although Volvo will undoubtedly take the top spot for sales of an individual model, it will be Land Rover taking the overall sales gong in the segment with sales of the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Land Rover Discovery combined likely to be almost twice those of the XC90.
