The new BMW 8 Series – BMW’s new range-topping coupe – will go in to production at BMW’s Dingolfing in Germany in 2018, confirms BMW’s Dingolfing boss.
The BMW Concept 8 Series was revealed back in June as BMW finally revived the 8 Series moniker for a car which, on the face of it, looks to be BMW’s answer to the Mercedes S-Class Coupe. The 8 Series Concept is a good looking car with its long bonnet, coupe roofline, prominent haunches and stubby back end, looking absolutely BMW, but very modern and extravagant BMW. It makes the S-Class Coupe look rather staid.
But BMW say they’re actually going after the Mercedes-AMG GT market with the new 8 Series, and it’ll be a real drivers car rather than a coupe plutocrat express. Which is what we thought the next 6 Series will be.
The production version has been expected to arrive in 2018, and now BMW has confirmed its arrival – in a form we expect to be almost exactly similar to the Concept – and that it will be produced at their plant in Dingolfing in Germany, starting in 2018.
The regular 8 Series Coupe range will include a new M8 too, with, it’s expected, all versions sporting a V8 under the bonnet, but it seems BMW won’t be sticking the 7 Series’ V12 under the 8 Series long bonnet.
The arrival of the new BMW 8 Series Coupe in 2018 will be followed by an 8 Series Convertible in 2019, as BMW start to focus not just on EVs and Hybrids, but on big margin, high-end cars.

this is going after the AMG GT ?? Don’t see that. If they don’t deliver on the driving end of that, and i don’t see how with this shape and high slung body, this will not find a market as it falls between the two segments where there are likely not a plethora of buyers. It’s allegedly not going to be the boulevardier that it initially portended to be, so now it won’t be a competitor for the 550/AMG 2 doors and it doesn’t appear to be of the AMG GT and GTc variety. So what is it?
