The SEAT Leon Cupra R ST is an estate take on the Cupra R Hatch, but with four-wheel drive and up to 365bhp. And it’s a SEAT, not a Cupra.
It’s probably just us, but we are getting a bit confused with the whole SEAT and Cupra thing.
Cupra is now a standalone ‘Brand’ for performance SEATs, but SEATs are still arriving with the Cupra badge – like this Seat Leon Cupra R ST. It’s a bit odd.
But, branding apart, there’s nothing odd about the Cupra R ST, essentially an estate take on the limited edition Leon Cupra R Hatch revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2017, with copper highlights and quad exhausts
It comes with 296bhp from its 2.0 litre TSI, but unlike the Hatch it has four-wheel drive which lets it put its power down rather better, hitting 62mph in 4.9 seconds.
Where things get a bit more interesting is the availability of an ABT Tuning Pack for the ST, which ups the power to 365bhp and cuts the 0-62mph to 4.4 seconds.
The ABT performance boost has no impact on homologation and is insurance rated, and better still it adds just £500 to the (not exactly bargain basement) £37,975 price of the R ST.
The SEAT Cupra R ST – the Cupra that’s still a SEAT – is being built in limited numbers and just 150 are coming to the UK. If you want one, it officially goes on sale on 9 April.
Or, if you want something a bit more subtle, you could always get a VW Golf R Estate.
