The range-topping Mercedes S65 AMG Coupe has been revealed, and offers up its credentials as the perfect alternative to the Bentley Continental GT W12 with its 621bhp V12 delivering performance of 0-62mph in a 4.1 second whoosh.

Even with its AMG badge, the S65 AMG Coupe is probably best thought of as the luxury take on the more aggressive and sporty S63 AMG Coupe – just as the V8 Continental GT is the sporty side of the Bentley Continental range – with its more effortless take on performance and power.

There’s no doubt you get plenty of power and torque from the big V12, with 621 bhp and 737lb/ft of torque – driven to the back wheels through Mercedes’ seven-speed Speedshift automatic ‘box – on tap, enough to get to 62mph in 4.1 seconds and on to a 155mph limited top speed – but in a more creamy and effortless way than the S63.

Despite all the performance, the S65 AMG Coupe still returns and official economy of 23.7 mpg (you’ll probably average 14-15mpg) and official emissions of 279g/km.

In keeping with its more luxury take on AMG performance, the S65 AMG Coupe gets the black detailing on the S63 replaced with chrome, fussier, less sporty-looking alloys and a big ‘V12 BiTurbo’ badge on the back of the front wings just so you’re in no doubt this is the ‘Daddy’ S Class Coupe.

Inside is pretty much the regular S-Class Coupe but with most of the goodies on the Mercedes option list as standard (although you can get more with the Exclusive Pack) and you’ll also get things like Magic Body Control, Curve Tilting (as an option), Active Parking, Surround Sound and Driving Assistance Package.

The new Mercedes S65 AMG Coupe will arrive at the end of 2014 in Mercedes UK showrooms priced from £183,065 – almost £30k more than the W12 Bentley Continental GT Speed.
