Peugeot 308 GT arrives as Hatch & Estate (SW)

The Peugeot 308 GT has been revealed ahead of a Paris Motor Show debut as a warm hatchback or estate with either a diesel or petrol engine.

The new Peugeot 308 started arriving in the UK at the start of 2014, but the choices didn’t include a hot, or even a warm, version for those who want a bit more get up and go in their family hatchback.

So the arrival of the new Peugeot 308 GT – as a hatchback or estate (SW) – is welcome, even if the 308 GT comes in the ‘warm’ rather than ‘hot’ category. We’ll have to wait for a 308 GTi or a production version of the Peugeot 308 R for proper get up and go.

The most powerful option for the new 308 GT is the 1.6 litre THP petrol which comes with a twin-scroll turbo and delivers 202bhp and 210lb/ft of torque. Interestingly, Peugeot are keener to tell us that a new 308 GT so equipped can do 50.4mpg than how quick it is.

If you’ve BIK to pay on your new 308 GT – or you have a strange obsession for burning oil – then there’s also a 2.0 litre BlueHDI diesel with 178bhp and official economy of 70.6mpg. Again, Peugeot aren’t saying how swift it is.

The 308 GT’s suspension has been tweaked from less sporty 308s to deliver a more involved drive (read firmer) and drops by 7mm at the front and 10mm at the back, there’s new 18″ alloys, firmer steering, a sportier exhaust note and a bigger set of brakes.

The standard i-cockpit from the rest of the 308 range remains but gets tweaked by GT graphics, red stitching and aluminium bits.

The new Peugeot 308 GT will debut in a few weeks at the Paris Motor Show and go on sale in October. By then, Peugeot may have decided how quick the 308 GT is and how much they’re going to charge for it.
