You might have thought, when the new Ford GT for 2016 was revealed at the Detroit Auto Show in January, that, stunning though it looked, this was going to be a ‘Blue Collar’ Supercar with a proper production run and prices that wouldn’t be completely barking. But it’s not.
Not only that, unlike the last Ford GT the 2016 Ford GT will be strictly limited in numbers, with just 250 being built a year.
But those willing to stump up a quarter of a million for a Ford do look like they’re going to get something rather special.
Proper supercar looks are indisputable, and Ford is promising 600bhp from a 3.5 litre twin turbo V6 EcoBoost engine, lots of carbon fibre and aluminium, clever suspension, advanced aerodynamics and a raft of technology.
Whether that adds up to a car that is as good as the Lamborghini Aventador, or any of a plethora of established supercars from ‘proper’ supercar makers that undercut it on price, remains to be seen.
But even at £250k, 250 cars a year worldwide isn’t too ambitious a target (Lamborghini sell four times as many Aventadors) so, as a halo project, it seems sure to succeed.
