Coachbuilder Zagato have revealed the Maserati Mostro, a limited edition retro racer paying tribute to the Maserati 450 S and debuting at Villa d’Este.
Zagato has always made interesting cars, and even their more recent cars have, on the whole, maintained much of the huge premiums attached to their initial purchase price.Zagato has a history with many of the world’s great car makers – including British companies like Aston Martin and Bentley – but they seem to be at their best when it’s an Italian marque they turn their attention to, and this – the Zagato Maserati Mostro – is a good example.
The handmade Mostro pays tribute to the 1957 Maserati 450 S – a car nicknamed Mostro for its enormous power – which was raced by Stirling Moss at Le Mans, with distinctive retro styling that pays tribute – in a good way – to the original.
Zagato are keen to keep the specifics of the Mostro under wraps ahead of its Villa d’Este reveal, but it is front-engined, has a Maserati V8, 19″ alloys, has a carbon fibre MonoCell and body, dry sump lubrication and six-speed semi-automatic gearbox.
Zagato say they are building just five Mostros – and all are sold – at a price likely to be the wrong side of £1 million.
The Monstro will be revealed at the 2015 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este to celebrate Maserati’s centenary.
