The Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 and E 53 – in Coupe and Cabriolet guise – arrive at Detroit Motor Show delivering hybrid power for Mercedes-AMG.
Mercedes has taken the wraps off new AMG versions of the new CLS and E-Class (coupe and Cabriolet) at the Detroit Motor Show, featuring a hybrid take on AMG power. The AMG CLS 53, AMG E 53 Coupe and E53 Cabriolet feature the same 3.0 litre six-cylinder engine with twin turbos – an electric compressor and exhaust gas turbo – with an integrated starter/alternator capable of adding an extra 22bhp in short bursts and providing a 48v electric system.
The combination delivers 429bhp (plus the boost) and 383lb/ft of torque, enough to get the CLS 53 to 62mph in 4.5 seconds and, if you want to shell out for the Driver’s Package, on to 168mph, with power going to all four wheels with Mercedes 4MATIC+.
Mercedes promise the hybrid setup will deliver more instant response from standstill as the electric compressor spools up immediately before the exhaust turbo comes in to play, and that the new powertrain will deliver economy of 33.6 mpg.
Visual cues to make the E 53 models stand out include a twin blade grille, more aggressive bumpers, bigger sills and AMG tailpipes, as well as 19″ AMG alloys.
Inside there’s Sports Seats, Red Seat Belts, AMG Performance Steering wheel and upholstery options including Leather/Dinamica, Nappa Leather and Designo options.
And if you were thinking of waiting for a range topping CLS 63 and E 63, don’t bother – this looks to be the new top of the range.
