McLaren Speedtail REVEALED – 250mph and 1036BHP for the McLaren F1 successor

McLaren Speedtail revealed

McLaren Speedtail revealed

The McLaren Speedtail – formerly known as the McLaren BP23 – is revealed as a long, sleek successor to the McLaren F1, with 1036bhp and a 250mph top speed.

The McLaren Speedtail has been on the way for a while, known by the BP23 moniker and pitched as very much the successor to the McLaren F1, complete with a 2+1 seating configuration with the driver front and centre. And now it’s officially revealed.

McLaren is building just 106 Speedtails (a nod to the total production run of the F1 in its various guises) with each costing £1.75 million (that’s £2.1 million in the UK with VAT included). And all 106 are already sold.

The Speedtail’s design is clearly influenced by aerodynamics, with a long, slim body (it’s actually a bit longer than a Mercedes S-Class), with a still familiar McLaren nose with smaller air ducts feeding air flow to be directed through and under the Speedtail, with its elongated rear improving aerodynamics further.

More aerodynamic influences are apparent with carbon fibre shrouds on the 20″ alloys, cameras instead of door mirrors – which slot in to the body in Velocity mode – and weight is kept down to 1430kg with Titanium Deposition Carbonfibre, with McLaren being quite anal about weight with stuff like electrochromic tints to negate the need for sun visors.

Oddly, McLaren tells us the Speedtail delivers 1,036bhp and can get to 186mph in just 12.8 seconds – on the way to 250mph – but they haven’t revealed what powers the Speedtail – beyond it being a hybrid – so we must assume it’s McLaren’s usual V8 with the wick turned up and an electric motor or two joining in the party.

Inside is a mix of the layout of the F1 with a healthy dose of modern McLaren thrown in, with lashings of leather (it’s ‘directional’, so you can slide in but then be held in place), with the start and Velocity Mode buttons on the ceiling so you can pretend to be a fighter pilot.

Despite its reveal today, it’ll be 2020 before the first McLaren Speedtail arrives with its owner.
