Smart #21 Final Collector’s Edition
As Smart goes from petrol power to EVs from 2020, along comes a typically bonkers final collectors edition of the petrol-powered Smart.
Smart is giving up on ICE power next year (and on the US market altogether) after, remarkably, 21 years of building pocket-sized cars at grown-up prices.Smart has been an expensive outing for Mercedes (it’s thought Smart has never made a profit), but they continue to persevere and clearly believe being the first established car maker to completely eschew ICE power will be a success.
But before petrol-powered Smart cars drive off in to the sunset for good, there’s a final edition model on offer and, typically, it’s slightly bonkers.
The Final Collector’s Edition – there will be just 21 – has been put together by Brabus and industrial designer Konstantin Grcic with a brief to deliver a contemporary work of art to end the era of petrol Smart cars.
It’s a two-tone Smart, but not in the way you might expect, with the front end looking like it’s had a bucket of bright yellow paint thrown in anger, and the back a more sombre black with #21 graphics.
Daniel Lescow, Smart’s Head of Brand, said:
For us, the Final Collector’s Edition marks both the end of an era and a new beginning as a significant milestone in the history of smart and towards a future horizon.
The final 21 Smart cars will leave the factory in August 2019, after which it’s EV Smarts or nothing.
