Mercedes EQG Concept points firmly to an electric G-Wagen to come

The Mercedes EQG Concept arrives as a firm pointer to an all-electric Mercedes G-Wagen, retaining all the off-road prowess of the ICE version.

The Munich Motor Show is, predictably, turning into an EV-Fest, and Mercedes is busy delivering soon-to-arrive models like the new Mercedes-AMG EQS and EQE. But it’s also looking forward to stuff to come – like an electric G-Wagen.

Previewing that future electric G-class is the Mercedes EQG Concept, trading ICE power for electric but promising to deliver at least the same off-road prowess as the ICE-powered G-Wagen.

Looking like a G-Class, but a G-Class let loose in a glitterball factory, the EQG concept shouts its EV goodness at every glance, from a black panel replacing the grille laced with blue ‘Squircles’, more ‘Squirclues’ on the door mirrors, a lit badge at the front, a lockable box here the spare wheel is on the G-Class (clearly electric G-Class models don’t need a handy spare) with more illumination and roof rack with LEDs. You’ll certainly see the electric G-Class coming at night.

Still with a ladder chassis for off-road chops, independent suspension at the front and a live axle at the back, the EQG uses a motor for each wheel and even a low-range ‘box for proper mud-plugging, with the batteries in the ladder chassis delivering a lower centre of gravity than ICE models.

Mercedes has given no indication of battery or power for the EQG, but it’s a safe bet to assume it will eclipse the G63 when it does arrive, probably in 2025.

It all looks promising, but can we please do without the Blackpool Illuminations look?
