The 2011 Chevy Camaro Convertible - V8 only in the UK

The Chevrolet Camaro Convertible has been revealed ahead of the LA Motor Show. It will be available in the UK but only as a 6.2 litre V8.

It’s been a few years in the making, but Chevrolet has finally taken the wraps off the convertible version of the latest Chevy Camaro ahead of its debut at the LA Motor Show next week.

The Chevrolet Camaro Convertible – although no one will call it anything other than the Camaro Convertible, or maybe Chevy Camaro Convertible – goes in to production in January and will arrive in the UK and Europe in 2011.

GM claim that the work they’ve done to make the Camaro work as a soft top has resulted in a car that has better torisonal rigidity than a 3-Series Covertible, thanks to stuff like a tower-to-tower brace under the hood, a transmission support reinforcement brace. an underbody tunnel brace, front and rear underbody “V” braces and a couple of great big RSJs (OK, we made up the RSJs).

Just like its hardtop sibling, the Camaro Convertible will come with a choice of V6 or V8 lumps and will – in the US – start from $30k. At today’s rates that equates to under £19k (plus the dreaded – around £22.5k total). There’s more chance of banks starting to lend again than being able top get a Chevy Camaro Convertible in the UK for that amount.

Strangely, the V6 doesn’t get to Europe – we get just the 6.2 litre V8. Which is just fine. For some strange reason it comes as standard with a six-speed manual box as standard with an auto ‘box as option. Did GM actually ask anyone on this side of the Pond if that’s what we want, or did they just assume we only do manuals?
