The 2017 Audi Q5 has been revealed at the Paris Motor Show as Audi take the design of the Q7 and downsize it on a new platform. On sale late 2016.
Remarkably, the Audi Q5 is the best-selling SUV Audi make, so getting the new Q5 right is clearly a critical task for Audi.Whether a design which looks derivative and based on the Q7, just downsized, is the right recipe, only time will tell, but it seems Audi’s buyers want cars which all look much of a muchness, so it’ll no doubt float boats.
Despite an appearance which shouts ‘Yet another look the same Audi’, the new Q5 is actually new under the skin, using the VW MLB platform to cut weight which should make the new Q5 a bit more dynamic and a bit more wieldy.
At launch there will be three basic engine options, with the 2.0 TDI offering various outputs, a 3.0 TDI with 282bhp and a 249bhp TFSI, with the 3.0 TDI getting an eight-speed auto and the rst either a six-speed manual or seven-speed S tronic.
To follow, no doubt, will be an SQ5 with around 350bhp as well as a hybrid Q5.
Rupert Stadler, Audi Chairman, said:
The first Audi Q5 was for many years the world’s best-selling SUV in its class. It was no easy task to design its successor, but that is precisely why it is so very exciting
With the new Q5 we are setting the bar a notch higher. Among the great innovations are the quattro drive system with ultra technology, highly efficient engines, the air suspension with damper control and a comprehensive line-up of infotainment and assistance systems.
The new Audi Q5 SUV will go on sale at Audi’s UK dealers before the end of the year, with first customer cars arriving in Spring 2017.
