The venerable 911 continues to succeed in great part because Porsche lavishes so much love and care on it. Constantly developed, and used to race in the real world, the Porsche 911 is the most perfect example of ‘Motoring Evolution’.
One big area Porsche utilises to develop the constant progression of the 911 is its racing teams and cars. And so the announcement today of further developments to the GT3 RSR for 2009 is an important indicator of future developments of the car.
Porsche GT3 RSR modified for 2009
The GT3 RSR is the most powerful of the ‘Race’ 911s, and had wins in the American Le Mans series and the Nurburgring 24 hours in 2008, and competes in the GT2 class.
The 2009 model gets bigger louvres to aid air flow and the optional AirCon, and the wing at the back gets a wider range of adjustment. Inside, a new multi-function display indicates the perfect gear-change point.
But the biggest change is to the engine capacity, which increases from 3.8 to 4.0 litres. Race regulations have reduced the size of the air restrictors for 2009, which is probably why this has been done. But if the new 4.0 litre engine proves reliable it is highly likely that we will see this passed over to the Carrera S before too long. And if you think about the performace diffence between the standard 3.6 Carrera and the S (at least 0.5 seconds quicker to 60) this would be quite a power boost if the S went from 3.8 to 4.0 litres. In the GT3 this new engine gives a better torque curve and better driveability across the range.
