Alvis 4.3 Litre to be reborn

June 23, 2010 By Cars UK

The Alvis 4.3 Litre

The Alvis 4.3 Litre with Vanden Plas body

Alvis owners Red Triangle are to re-create the 1936 Alvis 4.3 Litre as a bespoke run of cars costing £170,000.

Red Triangle own the rights to all things Alvis, and have been providing parts and expertise to owners of Alvis cars since the ’60s. And they have a plan. An interesting plan. They’re going to start building a new Alvis. But it’s not a new design. It’s the 1936 Alvis 4.3 litre with just the smallest of sops to the 21st century.

And the plan appears not to be stopping with the re-creation of the 4.3 Litre. Alan Stote – the man in charge at Red Triangle – is planning to reintroduce selected Alvis models in the years to come. But it’s the 4.3 Litre that’s hitting the headlines now.

It seems that Alvis originally intended there to be 77 4.3 Litre cars built, but only 11 were. So they feel justified in calling this new 4.3 Litre a continuation of the original. The bodywork will be close to the original Vanden Plas body on the picture above and even the engine – an in-line six – will be built from original blueprints.

There sops we mentioned to 21st century needs include hydraulic brakes and safety requirements like a collapsible steering column and a high centre brake light. The engine will also get fuel injection to make its emissions acceptable and to get a bit more power.

All sounds great, but it won’t come cheap. Red Triangle will be looking to relieve you of £170k for a ‘New’ Alvis 4.3 litre. Which is a chunk of change, although it’s probably about half of what you would have to pay for an original car.

I have a fondness for Alvis. One of my Dad’s first cars was an Alvis TA14. So I’ll be very curious to see what this is like next week when it’s unveiled at Goodwood.

We’ll let you know.
