Chrysler Ypsilon - UK prices and details
The Chrysler Ypsilon – a Chrysler badged version of the Lancia Ypsilon – is now on sale in the UK. Starts at £10,695.
As part of Fiat’s efforts to integrate its range with its new toy – Chrysler – we are now getting Chrysler-badged Lancias in the UK, in this case Lancia’s stretched Fiat 500/Panda – the Chrysler Ypsilon.
The Chrysler Ypsilon is the first new Lancia – in all but name – to get to the UK since Lancia gave up on the UK market after we got fed up with Lancias falling apart back in 1993.
But as we’ve taken to the Fiat 500 in droves, there’s a decent chance the UK will take to the grown-up 500 in the guise of the stretched Chrysler Ypsilon with its extra room.
The front of the Ypsilon is a bit of a heavy affair without the cute factor the 500 dialled-in, but the back end is interesting – in a good way.
Chrysler are aiming to take on up-market Fiestas with the Ypsilon, and although it’s not going to make a severe dent in Ford’s domination, it’s a decent alternative.
Engines on offer include the 1.2 litre four-pot petrol which manages to deliver a whole 68bhp, manages to just get past the 100mph mark and takes a full 14 seconds to get to 62mph. But it does average 57.6 mpg and emits 115g/km.
A better alternative is probably the 0.9 litre TwinAir which has a more useful 84bhp to9 play with, can manage to get to 109mph and gets to 62mph in 11.9 seconds. It also averages 67.3mpg and emits 99g/km. But be warned, although the TwinAir 2-pot can be economical, if you make the most of its zinginess it’s not.
The most powerful engine on offer in the new Ypsilon is the 1.3 litre Multijet II turbo-diesel, which has 94bhp, can get to 114mph, averages 74.3mpg and emits 99g/km.
All Chrysler Ypsilons get StopStart and a decent level of kit and come with a five-speed manual ‘box, although you can opt for a semi-auto five-speed ‘box on the TwinAir, which actually makes the 2-pot less emitting and more economical – just.
The 2012 Chrysler Ypsilon is now on sale from £10,695 for the Ypsilon 1.2S to £15,695 for the Ypsilon 0.9 TwinAir Auto Limited.
