Tesla reveals prices for the Model S EV

December 21, 2011 By Cars UK

Tesla Model S Price

Tesla Model S Price Revealed

The Tesla Model S finally has a proper price attached to it, with the base model starting at $57,400 and the range topper coming in at $87,400.

It’s easy to take the mickey out of Tesla and their promise of an electric car nirvana with the Model S. The prices Tesla has always quoted revolve round a four seat, four door luxury executive express coming in at a frankly unbelievable sub $50k.

But that’s exactly what’s been revealed today, with the Tesla Model S with a 160 mile range battery pack costing $49,900. Mind you, that is after Federal tax credits thrown at eco cars, so the actual list price is $57,400. Still, that’s quite a deal for an impressive sports saloon.

Taking a straight conversion of USD to GBP, adding import duty and tax, and you’d end up somewhere around £48k. But a closer guess would probably be a straight Dollars to Pounds conversion. Even then, that will make the Tesla S only around £50k after the taxpayer bribe of £5k when the Tesla S arrives in the UK, probably in early 2013.

Moving up the Model S range we get the 230 mile range option at $67,400 and the 300 mile range Model S at $77,400. The range-topping Performance – with a 0-60mph of 4.4 seconds – will cost $87,400. Tesla are also warranting the batteries for eight years.

The range Tesla are quoting for their Model S cars is based on an average speed of 55mph, so if you opt for the 300 mile range battery – an 85kWh battery pack – and the Performance version you’ll be lucky to see half that. But that still makes the Model S more than usable for most.

Options are where Tesla will probably make their money, and although all the Model S range comes with 19″ wheels and a huge 17″ touchscreen there’s plenty of ways to spend more on your car. 21″ wheels will cost $3500, metallic paint $750, Tech Pack $3,750 and Nappa leather $1500.

Tesla certainly seem to have delivered on price. Lets’ hope the car itself delivers on its performance and luxury promise.
