We reported last month that the new BMW M4 Convertible would debut at this year’s New York Auto Show, and here it is ahead of that debut complete with trick folding metal roof, 425bhp and a price tag that just nicks over the £60k line.
The new 3-piece metal folding roof can be tucked away in a mere 20 seconds at the flick of a switch, with better noise insulation than the M3 Convertible had and more room in the boot when the roof is down too.
But the trick metal roof – and some small RSJs to keep the front and back together when the roof is down – adds the weight of two grown men to the M4, which blunts performance a little.
The extra 250kg the M4 Convertible is carrying means the 425bhp twin-turbo 6-pot now takes 4.6 seconds to get to 62mph (4.4s with the auto ‘box) which, although 0.3s than the coupe, is still not exactly sluggish and economy takes a hit too at 31mpg in the manual (32.5mpg in the auto) an almost 10 per cent penalty compared to the M4 Coupe.
Elsewhere, the M4 Convertible is much like its coupe sibling, with the more butch M treatment making it look more purposeful than its lesser siblings, 19″ alloys, heated sports seats, M steering wheel, BMW’s Professional Media Pack and front and rear parking sensors all included in the spec.
The new BNMW m4 Convertible will go on sale in the UK in September after its debut at the New York Auto Show later this month
