The updated Fiat 500, revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in March, is now on sale in the UK with a new engine, new Cult trim and pries from £10,160.

It’s hard to update a car that’s already a pastiche of an original, so Fiat has been very cautious with the updates for the Fiat 500 for 2014, although there are some welcome improvements.

One modern change is the arrival of a 7″ TFT digital instrument display – standard on the 500S and 500 CULT and optional on 500 Lounge versions – which does a good job of mimicking the 500’s analogue instruments but with a central section that can be configured to display stuff like trip information and allows for more detailed information on everything from gear shifts to SatNav info (where specced).

The biggest mechanical update comes with the arrival of a 104bhp version of the 0.9 litre TwinAir engine promising 0-62mph in 10 seconds (and it’ll feel a lot quicker) and official economy of 67.3mpg (you’ll get a lot less).

Other engines remain the same with a choice of the 69bhp 1.2 litre petrol, the 85bhp version of the 0.9 litre TwinAir and 94bhp 1,3 litre MultiJet turbo diesel.

Starting point is the Fiat 500 Pop with the 1.2 litre engine, which costs £10,160 (£13,160 for the 500C Cabrio) and gets new colour and upholstery choices (as does the rest of the range), Start-Stop, electric windows and mirrors, remote locking and electric power steering, with options including AirCon (£530 – standard on the 500C Pop)), ESP (£320) and rear parking sensors (£270).

The Fiat 500 Colour Therapy from £10,960 (£13,510 for the Cabrio) adds speciaol paint and white detailing and can be optioned with Dualogic ‘box (£750) electric sunroof (580) and Blue&Me (£270) with the 500 Lounge (from £11,560 and £14,560 for the Cabrio) adding AirCon, 15″ alloys, Blue&Me, Voice Recognition, steering wheel controls, heated door mirrors and glass sunroof.

If you want to get a bit sporty, the 500S offers new bumpers, side skirts, 15″ sport alloys, leather-trimmed Abarth steering wheel, new upholstery with ‘500S’ logo, the new TFT instruments and a sporty gear knob, although you do lose the glass roof from the Lounge spec. Prices from £11,710 and £14,710 for the Cabrio.

Topping out the 2014 range is the new 500 CULT which gets the Lounge spec but adds in Climate, 16″ alloys, rear parking sensors, glass sunroof, TFT instruments and leather upholstery with starting prices at £13,060 and £15,560 for the CULT 500C.
