The Jaguar FUTURE-TYPE – JLR’s vision of an electric car 20 years hence
Jaguar Land Rover has become the latest car maker to announce plans for an electrified version of every model in its range, with Hybrid, Plug-in and EV versions by 2020.
Jaguar Land Rover has become the latest car maker to announce its plans for an electrified version of every car in both the Jaguar and Land Rover range by 2020.The initial headline act is the convincing Jaguar i-Pace – a clear rival for the Tesla Model X – which is soon to arrive, but every model in both ranges will have an electrified version in the next couple of years.
Just like Volvo is doing, Jaguar wants to use electrification to cut its emissions burden, but the idea this is the end of the ICE engine is a long way from reality.
What will be happening – apart from the i-Pace and other models built on its EV platform – is the introduction of Hybrids and Plug-in Hybrids across the Jaguar and Land Rover range, boosting performance, cutting emissions and improving economy.
Jaguar has also revealed the (virtual) ‘Jaguar FUTURE-TYPE’ Concept (above) as a hint at what a Jaguar will be like in 20 years time.
It features Jaguar’s SAYER intelligent steering wheel, which is a bit like a combination of a steering wheel and Amazon’s Echo, designed to move from home to car and run your life for you.
But JLR boss, Ralph Speth, did sound a warning about electrification of Cars for the UK, asking where the recharging infrastructure was, and how the National Grid will cope if we all start plugging our cars in when we get home from work.
He has a point.
