Williams and Unipart create Hyperbat
Williams Advanced Engineering and Unipart have joined forces to create Hyperbat Limited, a new manufacturer of batteries for electric cars in the UK.
Williams may not be having the best of times in F1 this year, but Williams Advanced Engineering is going from strength to strength and its latest venture – a joint project with Unipart – looks to be a very opportune one.Williams has teamed up with Unipart to create Hyperbat Ltd, and will open a new car battery manufacturing plant in Coventry next year, in the process creating 90 jobs as it builds low volume, high performance batteries and delivers a secure future supply chain in the UK for its battery production.
It seems a perfect match between Williams and Unipart, with Williams experience powering all the cars on the Formula E grid clearly given them the technical nous, and Unipart’s manufacturing and logistics delivering the ‘how to make it work’ bit.
Craig Wilson, Williams director, said:
We are pleased to be working with Unipart, growing a new capability for our sector in this country for hybrid and electric vehicles, securing the on-shore supply chain for the long-term. Hyperbat will also deliver into high performance battery applications beyond automotive, delivering innovative technology and high value manufacturing, as well as jobs for the next generation workforce.
Hyperbat will start delivering battery production in time to power the new electric Aston Martin Rapide E next year, with additional customers for their new batteries announced in due course.
