McLaren Grand Tourer set to redefine what a GT is

The McLaren Grand Tourer is on the way as McLaren set out to redefine what a Grand Tourer is, with a high-performance, mid-engined GT.

McLaren has said, more than once, that it won’t build an SUV, but that doesn’t mean it can’t stretch itself beyond supercars and hypercars, And that looks to be exactly what is planned with the announcement there’s a McLaren Grand Tourer on the way.

Speaking at the Geneva Motor Show, McLaren boss, Mike Flewitt, declared that the new McLaren GT will redefine the Grand Tourer and be the most usable mid-engined car yet.

From the only image we have of the new McLaren GT (above) it’s hard to see what will be on offer, but with McLaren declaring it will offer high performance and continent crushing abilities combined with comfort and space, it’s clearly not going to be like any Mclaren we’ve seen so far.

The very elongated tail leads us to suspect there may even be room in the back, although with Flewitt saying it will share its DNA with the McLaren Speedtail, we could see a GT with a three-seat layout.

It seems the McLaren GT – or whatever they choose to call a production model – won’t sit in any of McLaren’s current ranges – Sports Series, Super Series or Ultimate Series – but will be a unique model. Although it will doubtless use a flavour of McLaren’s V8.

Mike Flewitt said:

It will be a car that combines competition levels of performance with continent-crossing capability, wrapped in a beautiful lightweight body. It’s a car that has been designed for distance and one that will also provide the comfort and space expected of a Grand Tourer. But with a level of agility never experienced before in this segment. In addition, it will be the lightest of Grand Tourers and by also having the best power-to-weight ratio, I promise it will be one of the quickest. In addition, it will be the only Grand Tourer to share its DNA with the 250mph McLaren Speedtail.
