Volkswagen now planning 70 full electric models

Volkswagen is now planning to deliver 70 fully electric models across the VW Group by 2030, accounting for 40 per cent of sales.

As Volkswagen transitions from the grim reaper of diesel to a fluffy bunny future of battery electric cars, it’s now decided their current goal of 50 new EVs by 2025 is just too modest a target.

So instead of aiming for just 50 EVs, it now has a new plan to deliver 70 EV models across the VW Group – including Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, SEAT, Skoda and Porsche – with production of 22 million by 2030.

VW are investing some £30 billion in the next five years as it transitions from diesel to electric power, and the onslaught of new electric models is already underway.

They include the Audi e-tron, Porsche Taycan and VW’s own electric ID models, as well as electric cars from other VW Group companies planned such as the SEAT el-born and Skoda Vision E.

Perhaps one obstacle in the way for VW – as it is for other car makers and their plans for an EV onslaught – is battery supply, although VW has already partnered with LG Chem, SKI, CATL and Samsung to secure battery availability, and is looking at a battery production facility in Europe too.

To charge all these EVs planned, VW is also part of Ionity which is rolling out 400 fast charging stations throughout Europe and the UK, with some already open and the firts UK ones under construction.

But what could be more interesting is VW’s venture with QuantumScape to deliver industrial scale production of solid-state batteries. Which could be a real game-changer, not just for VW but the whole EV movement.

VW’s future looks increasingly ‘Green’.
