Ferrari SF90 Stradale – 986bhp of plug-in hybrid power from Maranello

The Ferrari SF90 Stradale arrives as Ferrari’s first series production plug-in hybrid car, with 1000 metric horses and four-wheel drive it hits 62mph in just 2.5 seconds.

The Ferrari SF90 arrives as Ferrari joins the electrified charge and delivers its first series production plug-in hybrid car. And it’s an impressive offering.

Gone is the idea that Ferrari’s range-topping model has to have a V12 at the front – because the SF90 has a V8 in the middle – and in comes four-wheel drive thanks to a pair of electric motors on the front wheels, as well as one to help the ICE power the back wheels.

The V8 engine is a completely re-worked version of the 4.0 litre V8 in the F8 Tributo delivering 769bhp and 590lb/ft of torque all on its own.

But the V8 is joined by electric motors powered by a modest 7.9kWh battery, with one electric motor between the engine and gearbox and one at each of the front wheels adding a total of 217bhp which, say Ferrari, can power the SF90 on EV power for up to 16 miles.

Throw it all together and the SF90 can hit 62mph in just 2.5 seconds, 124mph in 6.7 seconds and on 20 211mph.

Ferrari say the aluminium and carbon fibre in the new chassis offsets the added weight of the hybrid additions, and there’s a new eight-speed auto box to complete the package as well as electronic torque vectoring (RAC-e), Side Slip Control and brake by wire.

Ferrari has also gone to town on the aerodynamic side of the SF90, with the chassis sitting lower at the front than in the middle for more airflow through the vortex generators, and a two-part active aero rear wing with a ‘shut off Gurney’ which can disappear in to the body to maximise downforce.

Inside is new Ferrari too, with a 16″ digital screen and new HUD, with steering wheel mounted toggles for the driving modes – eDrive, Hybrid, Performance, and Qualify – which do what they say on the tin.

No news on prices for the SF90 yet, but reckon on it being around £400k.
