VW ID 4 Electric SUV previewed
The big deal for Volkswagen is the ID 3, but lurking in a corner, in a glass box, sits a first look at the VW ID 4, an electric VW SUV for 2020.
The Frankfurt Motor Show may be lacking some big names this year as car makes turn away from Motor Shows as a key component of their marketing strategies. But it’s a big deal for Volkswagen. The 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show will probably go down in car history as either the start of VW’s Third Reich, as it delivers the ID 3 and turns in to a volume maker of electric cars, or a gamble that didn’t work and led to the break up of the VW Group, as the buyers never came for electric cars VW is planning to build in the millions.
Whichever of those scenarios turns out to be the case we will, for the next few years at least, be seeing an onslaught of electric cars from the Volkswagen Group as it tries to convince car buyers that EVs are the only way. And it all starts with the ID 3.
With prices starting from around £26k when it arrives next year, the ID 3 is priced at a point that’s about the average purchase price in the UK for a new car and, although it’s hardly the ‘electric car for everyone’ VW say it is, many will be able to afford one. If they actually want one.
But next up for Volkswagen is the VW ID 4, and it will come as an electric SUV and Coupe SUV and, perhaps more importantly, be heading for the US market too (the ID 3 isn’t) with, eventually, big production plans for the ID 4 in the States too.
It will aim to lock horns with Tesla’s Model Y when it arrives – and a plethora of other electric compact SUVs heading to market too – and it’s expected to launch next year.
VW didn’t give the ID 4 any real coverage at Frankfurt but, lurking in a corner in a glass box (above), there was a look at the VW ID 4, suitably camouflaged, as just as a little tease of what’s to come.
It’s likely to look like a production take on 2017’s ID Crozz Concept, and the underpinnings and platform will be much the same as the ID 3, although prices will inevitably be higher, and it looks like there will also be a 300bhp four-wheel drive version too.
Expect VW to soon start teasing out titbits on the ID 4 as it starts to expand on its initial ID 3 offering.
