Volkswagen has a new ‘R’ logo
Volkswagen has revealed a new logo for their sporty range-topping ‘R’ models to go along with its new simplified ‘VW’ logo.
It’s a always a constant source of amusement when businesses reveal a new logo – often after spending vast sums of money on its design – and hardly anyone can see the difference. But there are (almost) always good reasons to make a change, especially if a business is developing in to new areas and wants to look more contemporary, and also to fit the demands of modern media.
One such recent logo update was for VW (left above) which has eschewed the bevelled and shadowed logo of old for what, to most, looks as simple a logo as possible.
It’s a simple flat circle with a small ‘V’ and larger ‘W’ inside, clearly identifiable as a VW logo, but a logo which will scale from use as a small Favicon to a full-blown mega billboard. So it makes sense.
What perhaps doesn’t make as much sense is the arrival today of a new logo for VW’s ‘R’ models (above right) which gets its very own update but without, seemingly, the simplicity and scalability across a diverse range of media sizes the new VW logo has.
VW are keen to regurgitate designer-speak, telling us the new ‘R’ logo is “characterized by the pristine line width and a clearly horizontal arrangement featuring dynamic curves” and that the “elongated R creates a broader, more powerful impression and defines Volkswagen’s commitment to performance and exclusivity“. And a lot more guff too.
But get used to the logo; it’ll start cropping up on VW’s R cars soon, starting with the new Atlas Cross Sport R-Line in the US.
