Overfinch are to build a £140k Range Rover in conjunction with Gun Makers Holland & Holland
Overfinch has always done good things with the Range Rover. They’ve made a very sound business out of taking Land Rover’s flagship model and giving it the power and on-road manners keen drivers always sought. And they add a few nice cosmetic touches – sometimes over the top – but never out-and-out Essex wide-boy.The truth is that as the Range Rover improves – and the 2010 version is very good – the Overfinch conversions become less relevant. Sure, there’ll always be a market for its good-looking wheels and some of the other cosmetic tweaks – including interior finishings – but the handling and performance package no longer transforms the Range Rover. It just enhances.
So maybe that’s why Overfinch has gone completely over the top and teamed up with Holland & Holland – makers of the world’s finest guns – to create what is probably the most luxurious and expensive ‘production’ Range Rover ever created. They’re not going to get much competition from Land Rover on the fixtures and fittings front – after all, they double the price of the Range Rover.
So what do you get for the price of a second Range Rover? Well, you get a completely bespoke, four-seat interior with drinks cabinet and fridge in the back centre console, with hand-made, fitted gun cabinets in the boot. You get a whole raft of exclusive woods and hides, and the drinks cabinet is even self-refreshing (almost – you get sent top-ups for the drinks – including Balvenie single malt whisky and Hendrick’s small-batch gin – but you have to put them in the car yourself).
Completely over the top, but impressive in a sort of ‘Why would you?’ way. And I’ve been struggling to work out who will buy one of the 100 Holland & Holland Range Rovers Overfinch are building each year. Every shooting ‘n’ Fishing Aristo I’ve ever known drives a beaten up old Land Rover. Or maybe a Subaru Estate. They’re too busy paying for the leaking roof on the family pile to even consider forking out £140k on something most of them would consider ‘Too Vulgar’.
So I guess they’re aimed at new money in emerging economies. Or Footballers. Or maybe just the terminally pretentious.
