The Citroën 2CV is returning as a sub-£13k electric car, previewed by the Citroën 2CV Concept and expected to go on sale in 2028.
Renault has shown legacy car makers the way to get customers to buy EVs with the modern recreation of iconic historic models, with the new Renault 5 E-Tech and R4 doing strong business. And now Citroën is plotting a drive down the same road, with this Citroën 2CV Concept previewing a new electric 2CV for 2028.Unlike Renault’s 4 and 5, the 2CV Concept is actually slightly smaller than the original at just 3.76 metres long, but manages to recreate plenty of design cues from the original, such as bug-eye headlights, flared wheelarches, curved high roof and ribbed bonnet.
Citroën is aiming for a weight of under a tonne, so it’s going to mean a small battery – probably under 30 kWh- to achieve that, but the original 2CV was never designed for anything other than ‘local’use – in town or country – so it makes sense to have a modest battery with modest range potential.
Inside, it’s beige bench seats and a steering wheel and surroundings which look like Bakelite, straps for door handles, a removable wicker storage basket, and egg storage in the doors (harking back to the claim the original 2CV could traverse a ploughed field with a tray of eggs without breakage).
Xavier Chardon, Citroën CEO, said:
Reinventing the 2CV isn’t about replicating a car from the past; it’s about reinventing what made it unique: its simplicity, its accessibility and the freedom it offered. With the 2 CV Concept, we’re bringing that spirit into today’s world to make electric mobility simpler, more human and more desirable. The world has changed. But the idea remains the same: to make life more beautiful with Citroën.
Citroën says the 2CV will arrive within two years and be priced at under £13k.
