The Porsche Mission S Concept is revealed as a pointer to a new range-topping Porsche supercar and a future design direction
Porsche’s dive into EVs is part of the reason they’re currently suffering financial woes, so there’s a backtracking on all things electric, and one of those backtracks is the idea of a range-topping electric Supercar/Hypercar as previewed by the Porsche Mission X Concept back in 2023.So instead of giving us a new electric range-topper, Porsche intends to deliver a new mid-engined hypercar with an ICE powertrain and previews it, and a future design direction, with this: the Porsche Mission S Concept.
The last time Porsche did a mid-engined car positioned at the top of the Porsche tree was with the 918 Spyder, but unlike that car, the production version of the Mission S will be a regular production model, not a limited-run hypercar, with plenty of design cues from Porsche’s back catalogue.
But it’s not just the ICE powertrain that goes back to what buyers actually want, but the interior too, which has a quintet of instruments behind the steering wheel, actual, physical controls and no central giant infotainment. Oh, bliss.
There’s no word on what exactly will power the Mission S, but it will be ICE-based – petrol, hybrid, and PHEV – but it would seem likely to be a V8.
Porsche’s Dr Michael Leiters said:
The Mission S provides a glimpse of the ideas and design features that will shape Porsche in the coming years. The focus is on the authentic, consequent and timeless design of the vehicle and a particularly intense connection between driver and car.
At the same time, the Mission S represents a mid-engined super sports car platform positioned above the 911 – not as a one-off hypercar, but as a permanent and versatile addition to our customer offering.
