Alfa Romeo Tonale Concept
The Alfa Romeo Tonale Concept is revealed at the Geneva Motor Show, previewing a smaller plug-in hybrid Alfa SUV for 2020.
Alfa Romeo hasn’t quite managed to fight its way to a healthy share of the market yet but this, the Alfa Romeo Tonale SUV, could be the car they need to get towards their 400,000 sales a year target.A surprise reveal, the Tonale is named after a mountain pass a bit lower down than the Stelvio Pass, and that tells you all you need to know.
Sitting below the Stelvio in Alfa’s range, the Tonale follows a family theme with looks clearly derived from the Stelvio, but with nice little touches like 21″ alloys inspired by the 33 Stradale and the slitty front lights from the Brera.
Alfa are being a bit coy about what underpins the Tonale, but it seems likely it will be based on the Jeep Renegade or Cherokee, complete with a range of petrol, and probably, diesel engine options.
But the headline act will be a plug-in hybrid Tonale using a petrol engine for the front wheels and an electric motor at the back. Again, Alfa are giving no details, but expect it to offer at the least the 236bhp the new Jeep Renegade PHEV offers.
With a few things toned down, expect the Tonale to arrive at the end of 2020.
