Now is the best time to buy a convertible

Now is the time to buy a convertible, with used convertibles having dropped in price by over 10% in the last two months.

Traditionally, the end of the year has seen a big drop in the price of convertibles. Conversely, the Spring always sees a price rise. Which in the past always made sense. After all, who wants to be driving round in a drafty, cold soft-top when winter bites?

All very sensible. But not any more. There is absolutely no logic to the seasonal price changes. Modern convertibles – especially the folding tin-top variety – are as good as their coupe siblings. They’re not drafty; they’re no noisier and to all intents and purposes you could be driving round in a tin-top car. And frankly, the cooler months are the best time to have the top down. Summer – with the sun blaring down (I know, 3 days a year in the UK) – is the time you really want the top up and the aircon on.

But blasting down country roads with the top down on a crisp winter morning with the heater on full belt is a joy. And if you get a car like the Mercedes SLK with its Air Scarf you’ll be toasty-warm even without hot air flying out of the vents on the dash. But any modern convertible can pull off the trick of keeping you cosy on a cold day even with the roof open to the elements.

So if you fancy a convertible – but you’re putting it off until the Spring – do yourself a favour and have a rethink. We had a press release in from Autoquake this morning detailing price drops in the last couple of months. Turns out that convertibles have dropped by between 10 & 15% in the last two months. Admittedly other cars have dropped too, but convertibles have dropped by at least a third more than anything else.

No brainer. Really.
